Here are 10 things we all need to know about our blood type

Although the blood is the same in every person, there are differences in the antigens. Each antigen gives each person an individual identity. This identity is called a blood type.

The blood pumped by the heart circulates throughout the body, carrying minerals, oxygen, nutrients, and other substances to the organs. Blood also serves to remove waste products from the body.

Blood components and their role:

Blood is produced in the bone marrow, and each of its components has a very specific task:

  • Red blood cells:  There are approximately 25 trillion of them in the adult body (1 trillion is equal to one billion). Their job is to transport oxygen to the organs and carbon dioxide to the lungs, where it is excreted.
  • White blood cells:  These blood cells contribute to the body's immunity and defend it against foreign bodies in case of injury or viral disease such as a cold.
  • Plasma:  This is a liquid composed of water and other nutrients such as carbohydrates, lipids, mineral salts, hormones, and proteins. It gives blood its viscous consistency, allowing it to circulate in the arteries and also contributes to blood clotting and immune defense.
  • Platelets:  help stop bleeding by closing wounds and cuts and also play a very important role in blood clotting in case of injury.

The link between red blood cells and blood types:

These red blood cells are also called erythrocytes or red blood cells. They contain hemoglobin, a protein that binds oxygen and gives blood its red color. The membranes of red blood cells carry antigens that determine the different blood groups. There are four blood groups: O, A, B, and AB. The Rhesus system is linked to the presence of a substance called D, which specifies the blood combination: there are therefore eight Rhesus groups/combinations.

10 things to know about your blood type:

Each blood type has its own characteristics. Here's what you need to know about your blood type:

    1. Blood type and diet:  Digestion and weight loss may be linked to our blood type. People with the following blood types should:

    O: Consume animal protein.
    R: Choose vegetables.
B: Consume a wider variety of foods and more fish.
AB: Choose seafood and lean meats.

    1. Blood type and personality:  People with blood type A are considered peaceful and creative. People with blood type O are considered extroverted and outgoing. People with blood type B are considered determined and passionate. They are independent and strong, while people with blood type AB are considered reliable and responsible.
    1. Blood type and fertility:  According to a study, women with blood type A are more fertile than women with blood type O, who have fewer eggs due to higher levels of the fertility hormone FSH.
    1. Blood type and stress sensitivity:  We react according to our blood type. People with blood type O are even more likely to get angry because they have higher levels of cortisol and adrenaline.
    1. Antigens in the blood:  Antigens differ according to blood type. For example, blood type A has A antigens and B antibodies; in blood type B, there are B antigens and A antibodies. In blood type AB, there are A and B antigens, but no antibodies. However, with blood type O, there are no antigens, only two types of antibodies: A and B.
    1. Blood type and weight gain:  Depending on your blood type, you tend to gain weight or have a flat stomach. With blood type O, you are more likely to gain fat.
      1. Blood type and children:  The partner's blood type is particularly important, especially when it comes to children. Rh factors can cause intolerances. A negative Rh factor in women and a positive Rh factor in men can pose a risk during pregnancy.
    1. Blood type and exercise:  People with blood type O prefer relaxing and calming physical activities such as meditation and yoga. People with blood type B prefer challenges and adventures. They may gravitate towards martial arts, rock climbing, or other sports that require physical exertion.
    1. Blood type in case of emergency:  Blood type is particularly important in an emergency. It is recommended to carry a blood type card when traveling. In the event of an accident or blood transfusion, this card could save your life.
  1. Blood type and diseases:  Each blood type is resistant to certain diseases and susceptible to others. Some diseases can be prevented due to the characteristics of our blood type. Studies have shown that people with blood types A, B, and AB are more likely to suffer a heart attack due to a certain gene in their blood.
