perfect for a seamstress, tailor, or fashion-themed celebration!
Ingredients:
For the Cake (Base + Sewing Machine Shape):
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
2 cups granulated sugar
4 large eggs
1 tbsp vanilla extract
1 ½ cups milk or buttermilk
For the Buttercream Frosting:
1 ½ cups unsalted butter, softened
4 cups powdered sugar
2 tsp vanilla extract
2–4 tbsp milk or cream
For Decorating:
Black, gray, white, and pink fondant
Edible metallic paint or food coloring pens
Edible sewing-themed decorations (mini scissors, buttons, tape, etc.)
Cake dowels or skewers for support
Gel food coloring (optional)
Instructions:
Step 1: Bake the Cakes
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a rectangular cake pan and a loaf pan.
In a bowl, whisk dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt).
In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla.
Alternate adding milk and dry mixture. Mix until smooth.
Pour into pans and bake for 30–40 minutes. Cool completely.
Step 2: Shape the Cake
Use the rectangular cake as the base.
Cut and stack pieces from the loaf cake to form the vertical part of the sewing machine (like the head and arm).
Use frosting between layers to help them stick, and cake dowels for structure.
Carve carefully with a serrated knife to round off edges and shape the machine.
Step 3: Crumb Coat & Chill
Cover the entire structure with a thin layer of buttercream (crumb coat).
Chill for 30–60 minutes to firm up.
Step 4: Final Frosting & Fondant Covering
Apply a smooth second layer of frosting.
Roll out fondant and cover each section
black or gray for the machine body, white for buttons/dials.
Use pink or colorful fondant for accents (spool of thread, stitch details).
Step 5: Add Sewing Details
Add fondant thread spool on top.
Use edible pens to draw seams, stitches, or labels.
Place fondant or sugar paste accessories like scissors, tape, or buttons around the base.
Tips:
Use a photo of a sewing machine as a reference while carving.
Support with dowels or straws inside the cake to keep vertical pieces steady.
Keep the cake chilled before displaying.
