“She was using her phone while it was charging”: 15-year-old girl dies from electrocution

A 15-year-old girl died on January 19, 2026, after being electrocuted while charging her phone. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with certain electronic devices.

An everyday activity turned into tragedy. On January 15, 2026, in the city of Augusto Corrêa, in northern Brazil, 15-year-old Beatriz Costa Diniz received a severe electric shock while using her phone plugged into an outlet. She was rushed to the hospital and died four days later after a stay in intensive care.

Her death deeply affected the local community. Her friends and neighbors described her as a beloved and devoted family woman. To help support her loved ones, Beatriz sold tapioca cakes on city buses.

The teenager suffered second- and third-degree burns.

According to authorities, Beatriz was electrocuted while charging her phone. According to The Mirror, her father found her at their home in Jutai and rushed her to a local hospital. She was later transferred to two other facilities for specialized care. The teenager suffered second- and third-degree burns and was eventually admitted to the intensive care unit at the Metropolitan Hospital of Belém.

After undergoing surgery, Beatriz died on Monday, January 19, four days after the accident. Forensic investigators declared her dead on January 20 and identified the teenager. Tallita Pinheiro, Secretary of Health for Augusto Corrêa, emphasized the seriousness of the situation but praised the rapid medical response, although sadly it was not enough to save the young woman.
