Some serious chronic illnesses may qualify you for a permanent pension in Italy. Here's which ones

 What does "permanent pension" mean?

A permanent pension is when a person, due to irreversible health reasons, is no longer able to work and receives financial support from the state. In Italy, this type of pension can be paid through:

Disability pension (total incapacity for work)

Ordinary disability allowance (AOI) (work capacity reduced by at least 2/3)

Attendance allowance

100% civil disability pension

The duration can be temporary or permanent, depending on the severity of the condition and the INPS's medical-legal assessment.

What chronic illnesses qualify for a permanent pension?
The list is not exhaustive, but among the most significant conditions recognized by INPS for disability are:

1. Serious oncological diseases
Advanced or metastatic tumors

Multiple recurrences or continuous invasive treatments

Many types of cancer qualify for disability with high percentages, up to 100%.

2. Degenerative neurological diseases
Multiple sclerosis

Advanced Parkinson's disease

ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis)

Severe epilepsy with frequent seizures

Alzheimer's disease or disabling senile dementia

3. Serious cardiovascular diseases

Chronic heart failure

Repeated heart attacks with permanent damage

Complex congenital heart disease

4. Chronic respiratory diseases

6. Diabetes mellitus with complications
Retinopathy, nephropathy, disabling neuropathy

Amputations, vision loss, or dialysis

7. Systemic autoimmune diseases
Systemic lupus erythematosus

Rheumatoid arthritis

Severe ankylosing spondylitis

8. Chronic renal failure on dialysis
Those undergoing continuous dialysis can obtain 100% disability recognition and, in some cases, a companion's allowance.

What are the requirements for obtaining a pension?
In addition to a diagnosis of the disease, you must:

INPS medical-legal recognition

Achieve a disability rating of 74% or more to be eligible for pensions or benefits

Not exceed certain income limits (for some benefits)

Be an Italian citizen or a legal resident in Italy

How do I apply?
The application must be submitted online on the INPS website or through:

Patronato (free of charge)

Certifying physician

Certified CAF (Federal Assistance Centre)

An electronic medical certificate and updated medical records are required.

Serious chronic illnesses can permanently compromise the ability to work, but there are protection and support tools for those in these conditions. Knowing your rights is the first step to facing the future with greater confidence.
