For years, I thought that doing laundry was one of the easiest household tasks: load clothes, add detergent, press a button, and wait. Yet, despite following this ritual carefully, my clothes were never really as clean as I would have liked. Sometimes they remained opaque, others gave off a not very fresh smell. The answer, surprisingly, was not in the clothes or in the program chosen, but in a detail that I had always underestimated: the detergent compartment of the washing machine.
A common mistake that many people make
Looking at the image, you can clearly see that the tray is divided into three compartments, numbered 1, 2 and 3. Yet, many people – including me – don’t really know what they are for. This seemingly trivial mistake can seriously compromise the effectiveness of the wash.
It’s not uncommon to fill the wrong compartment with detergent or fabric softener, thinking that “everything goes in the same place”. In reality, each compartment has a precise function, designed to release the product at the right time in the washing cycle.
What are the three compartments really for?
Compartment 1 – Pre-Wash
This compartment is intended for pre-wash detergent. It is only used when the garments are very dirty, for example with mud, sand or stubborn stains. If you put the detergent here without selecting the pre-wash programme, the product is immediately discarded with the initial water, which is completely useless.
Compartment 2 – Main wash
It is the most important compartment. Here you have to put the main detergent, the one that actually cleans your clothes during the wash cycle. If you make a mistake and put the detergent in another compartment, the laundry will inevitably be unclean.
Compartment 3 – Fabric softener
This is dedicated exclusively to fabric softener. It is released only during the last phase of rinsing, to make the fabrics soft and fragrant. Putting fabric softener in the wrong compartment means losing its effect completely.
‘Cause the laundry was never really clean
After discovering the correct use of the tub, I understood why for years my laundry did not give the desired results. Detergent was often released too early or at the wrong time, without the time needed to act on the fabric fibers.
In addition, incorrect use promotes the accumulation of detergent residues inside the washing machine, which over time can cause:
bad smells,
proliferation of bacteria,
Reduction of the life of the appliance.
How this discovery changed the way I did laundry
Once I learned how to use the tray correctly, the difference was immediate. The clothes were:
visibly cleaner,
softer,
with a fresher and longer-lasting scent.
In addition, I have noticed that I use less detergent, avoiding unnecessary waste. The washing machine also seems to work better, with no residue or bad smells
Another aspect that is often ignored is regular cleaning of the detergent drawer. Over time, detergent and fabric softener residues can build up and harden.
It is advisable to:
take out the tray at least once a month,
wash it with hot water,
use a small brush to remove residue,
Dry it before reinserting it.
This simple operation further improves the effectiveness of washing and prevents unpleasant odours.
Small details that make a big difference
Many people think that to get the perfect laundry, you need expensive products or complicated programs. In reality, it is often enough to know your washing machine better and use it correctly.
The detergent drawer is a perfect example: it is always under our eyes, but we rarely stop to understand how it really works.
Conclusion
Learning how to use the washing machine compartment correctly has completely transformed the way I do laundry. A simple gesture, which takes a few seconds, can make a huge difference in the final results.
If you’ve always had the feeling that your clothes were never really clean, maybe the problem isn’t the detergent, nor the washing machine, but how you use the tub. Sometimes, the simplest solutions are the most effective.
