Ear Lump and Ear Cyst: How to Improve and Heal

Have you noticed a lump growing behind or above your ear? Sometimes, this lump or cyst in the ear can be painful. When there is pain, it is usually due to an infected skin cyst or a sebaceous cyst. These lumps are quite common, so they are frequently seen in ear, nose, and throat (ENT) clinics.

### Does your lump on your ear have a small “hole” or puncture?

Some patients have previously had a smaller lump in the same area behind the ear. Over time, this lump can become more inflamed and infected. A careful examination may reveal a small spot or “hole” (punctum), from which a thick, pimple-like substance may sometimes drain.

An ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist can quickly recognize that it is an infected sebaceous cyst behind the ear. The doctor will also examine the inside of the ear canal to rule out, in rare cases, a connection to the cyst due to a developmental problem.
