I thought I had my future all figured out, until a truth changed everything. What happened next turned what should have been a joyous celebration into something completely unexpected.

The doctors told me I had a hereditary genetic condition. It didn’t affect me directly, but it could be passed on to my future children. I nodded as if I understood… but I didn’t. I could only think of one thing: the fear of hurting someone who didn’t yet exist.

I made an impulsive decision.
I chose to undergo a procedure that would prevent me from having children. I did it convinced it was the right thing to do… even though I had always dreamed of being a father.

Afterward, I buried that decision. I told myself I would face the consequences later.

Then Stephanie appeared.

I didn’t tell her the truth. I waited for the “right moment,” but that moment never came.

Three years passed.
We got engaged. We built a life together: routines, plans, shared dreams. From the outside, everything seemed perfect.

Until that night.

She came into the house beaming.

“I have a surprise,” she said. “I’m pregnant… ten weeks.”

I felt the ground disappear beneath my feet.

I smiled… but inside, everything shattered.

She didn’t know I couldn’t have children.

And that could only mean one thing.

Even so, I pretended.

“It’s incredible,” I said. “We have to celebrate.”

She hugged me, overjoyed. I hugged her back… as if I didn’t know the truth.

But something didn’t add up.

Ten weeks.

Because exactly ten weeks earlier… we had broken up.

That argument was the worst of our relationship. Shouting. Words that never fade. She took off her ring and left, telling me not to contact her.

For almost two months, we didn’t speak.

Not a single message. Not a single call.

Until she came back… as if nothing had happened. She said she wanted to fix things. And I agreed.

Now she was standing in front of me, saying she was pregnant.

And the dates didn’t lie.

I didn’t sleep that night. I stared at the ceiling, trying to convince myself I was exaggerating.
