If you have ever walked into a room and found your dog curled up in your chair or your cat stretched out across your pillow, you are certainly not the only one. Many pet owners notice that their animals seem oddly determined to claim the exact places where they usually sit or sleep. While it may sometimes feel as though your pet is deliberately taking over your space, animal behavior experts say the explanation is much simpler and far more affectionate than it appears.

One of the clearest reasons is comfort. Dogs and cats are naturally drawn to places that feel soft, warm, and peaceful. Your favorite chair, bed, or spot on the couch often offers everything a pet could want: cushioning, warmth, and a quiet area where they can fully relax. If you have recently been sitting or lying there, the spot may still hold your body heat, which makes it even more attractive. Animals naturally look for environments that help them feel physically at ease and safe enough to rest deeply.

Security also plays an important role in this behavior. When pets sleep, they are more vulnerable, so they tend to choose locations where they feel protected. Dogs often enjoy resting close to their owners or in spaces that feel sheltered and enclosed. Cats may prefer spots that allow them to stay comfortable while still keeping an eye on the room around them. A pillow, the back of a sofa, or the corner of a bed can offer exactly that balance of rest and awareness.

But perhaps the most meaningful reason has to do with familiarity. Pets rely heavily on scent, and the places you use most carry the smell that is most comforting to them: yours. For dogs, being close to their person often strengthens their sense of connection and belonging. Cats, despite their reputation for independence, are also deeply responsive to familiar scents and spaces. So when your pet settles into your favorite spot, it is often not an act of defiance at all.
