Being a warm and humid environment, it is the ideal place for flies to lay their eggs and for maggots to subsequently take their place.
This poses a problem for everyone: nobody wants to have these little creatures in their home.
In this article, we offer tips to say goodbye to these annoying creatures.
1. Prevention is better than cure:
a. Mint, eucalyptus and bay leaf:
– Coat the sides of the bin with peppermint essential oil.
– Crush dried bay, eucalyptus or mint leaves and scatter them around and inside the bin.
– These plants are a real repellent for maggots.
b. Disinfect the bin:
– Use one of the following combinations: a layer of salt and boiling water, white vinegar and boiling water, bleach, household alcohol or washing soda crystals.
c. Instructions to follow:
– Get into the habit of putting leftover fish, meat or deli meats in tightly sealed plastic bags before throwing them in the bin because they provide a favorable environment for the proliferation of maggots.
– Clean and disinfect your bin every time you remove the bin bag: the bags tear quite often and you end up with a bin full of waste, hence the need to disinfect the bin frequently.
2. Dispose of the maggots in a bin:
a. What you need:
– Boiling water.
– Bleach.
– A clean, dry cloth.
– Peppermint oil.
b. Steps:
– Remove the bag and place it in an external container.
– Clean the bin with the mixture of boiling water and bleach.
– Rinse thoroughly: no maggot carcasses should remain.
– Dry the tray with the cloth.
– Put a few drops of peppermint essential oil at the bottom of the bin for a repellent effect.
– You can now drop off a new bag.
– Repeat this process every week.
